The Ghana Ministry of Health is a government organization that manages the health care system in Ghana. The Ghana Ministry of Health has introduced national medical insurance for Ghanaians. The system is called the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which covers fees for hospitalizations, doctor visits, lab testing, and certain medications (Drislance et al., 2014). Before implementing NHIS, healthcare was mainly a cash-only service. NHIS covers significant illnesses such as malaria treatment, gastrointestinal infection, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. Hospitals are primarily found in Ghana's two major cities of Accra and Kumasi. The health care system's challenge is the availability of medical services and personal to rural areas. A 2017 estimate noted, per 1,000 people, there are 0.136 physicians, and in 2018 per 1,000 people, there are 4.2 nurses and midwives (The World Bank, 2018). Ghana has made positive changes in its healthcare system; however, improvements are needed with the physician to patient ratio and expanding the healthcare to rural areas.
